Tomorrow chosen by ARMY
Onomey - Despite this song
being a reasonably slow song, Suga shines as he starts the song strongly with
a rap verse. Although he doesn’t have any other lyrics throughout the
rest of the song, this verse sticks with me because the meaning of the lyrics
resonates with me personally because it can be a hard time being in your twenties
and not knowing what tomorrow holds for you and whether or not you will reach
the potential you set out for yourself because each day seems to hold you back
as each day begins to merge into one.
‘Keep feeling like
the “control” beat, keep downloading it
Every single day is a
repetition of Ctrl+C Ctrl+V’.
Cheryl - Thank you all for
voting in our Suga poll and choosing the song Tomorrow.
Suga sets the scene
for the song - Twentysomethings out of work and feeling like their days are on
repeat “same day, same moon 24/7 every moment repeats” and therefore they are
scared for tomorrow. I particularly like the “control c and control v” lyric,
maybe because I spend a large portion of my working day using these functions.
The other members
have the replies of don’t give up and don’t move backwards
and follow your
dreams. This isn’t a stop, but just a pause in your life for a break.
I find the song to
be very uplifting and positive both lyrically and visually.
Eve - One of BTS’ incredible youth
empowerment songs from Skool Luv Affair, these subjects are one of the reasons
BTS’ fans identified with their message and became the loyal fans they are
and why as BTS and their fans continue to grow together they continue to speak
to each other through their music.
Suga provides the opening verse to this
song which while having the signature hip hop style it includes some
interesting distortion over V's sections and some emotion building electronic
guitar riffs.
Same day, same moon
24/7 every moment repeats
My life is in between
Jobless twenty-somethings are afraid of
tomorrow
It’s funny, you think anything is
possible when you’re a kid
When you feel how hard it is to get
through a day
Keep feeling like the “Control” beat,
keep downloading it
Every single day is a repetition of
Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V
Suga’s verse is created to fit with the
strong repeating beat, you can hear the control that is used to keep the
regular pattern, but coming through is Suga's emotions, along with his
heightened breathing the small but effective inflection in his rapping
emphasising words are what make Suga the incredible artist we all know and
admire.
Charlie - Tomorrow is one of
the songs that proves to me that BTS write lyrics that we can all relate to, as
it is about worrying about the future. Yoongi was one of the writers and
producers, so I respect him an awful lot for writing a song with such
comforting lyrics that I relate to so much. Little touches like the way
Taehyung’s voice is muffled just as how he sings about not being able to scream
in frustration, make me admire the genius that is Min Yoongi. He managed to
make the song beautiful, comforting and uplifting, and this song is one of the
reasons why Skool Luv Affair is one of my favourite albums by BTS.
Michayla - Skool Luv Affair
is an album full of great songs and Tomorrow is certainly one of them. It has a
great beat and if you have watched it performed on one of the live stage
performances, you will also know how great the choreography is, for what is
essentially quite a slow song. Not only did Yoongi have a hand in writing and
producing this song, his voice is the first we hear and in typical ‘Suga’ style
he raps with so much passion, which is then followed by the softness of
Jungkook's voice.
It is because of Yoongi’s involvement
in the lyrics that I feel this was a great poll winner for this week’s theme.
Tomorrow is about striving to get to your ‘tomorrow’ and never giving up hope,
follow your dreams even if that means standing alone. As always, profound
lyrics by great artists.
So Far Away - Marsha
Not only is this song an emotional roller-coaster but it's one that speaks to me on a very personal level.
There is no chance of your dreams becoming a reality as you are told that is not the reality that is destined for you. A dream is just a dream...
"It’s really a bitch to not have something you want to do
I know that it
seems pathetic
To not have a dream
like everyone
“Everything’s going
to be alright if you go to university
And do as we tell
you”
I’m the asshole for
believing those words
I'm living because
I can’t die"
There are 2 sides of the story in this song, the first is giving up before you have even started to dream, not even able to move forward and stuck in a downward spiral of pressure to just live.
"Just pass me
the drink
Because I want to
get drunk today
So please don’t try
to stop me
I don’t mind the
brand, it might be a luxury
For a person with
no job to have a drink
Everyone is running
but why am I the only one still here?
Everyone is running
but why am I the only one still here?
Everyone is running
but why am I the only one still here?"
The other side, a call and response from Suran is that you must not give up hope. Your dreams may just be a dream right now but if you persevere and give yourselves some space to create, you will get there in the end. But you have to want and work for it.
"Dream, I will
be there for your creation
Until the end of
your life
Dream, wherever you
might be
It will be lenient
Dream, you will
fully bloom
After all the
hardships
Dream, your
beginnings will seem humble
So prosperous will
your future be"
This is how I
interpret this song, for others it may be a different meaning. I don't think
there is a right or wrong answer. I'm grateful to Min Yoongi for having an
outlet and ability to write and release such deep and brutally honest music
that speaks to a wide generation and will do for many more years to come.
Tear - Onomey
With this weeks theme
being about songs that showcase Suga and his amazing talents, there’s one song
that comes to mind when thinking about it. Tear is another great performance by
the BTS rap line and is a powerful song that makes you want to jump up and down
to the track regardless of what mood you’re in.
The reason why Suga
in particular, stands out to me when listening and watching performances of
Tear is that you can feel the energy he brings to performances through his love
for rap and hip-hop. I enjoy watching Suga almost transform into the pure
rapper than is ‘Agust D’ mid-performance as he gets more and more into the song
and delivering his hard-hitting rap lyrics.
Suga shows several
different rapping flows within this song, and by doing so, shows that he is
versatile in his rapping abilities which is a great thing as some rappers struggle
to change up their flow pattern which can result in every song sounding the
same because their flow patterns are near identical to other songs.
His first
introduction in the song is in the second verse with J-Hope where their rapping
flow would almost be classed as singing which is switched up to a trap flow in
his individual verse which is about wanting the other person to completely
destroy his heart so there is no hesitation on whether or not either party will
change their mind and reunite which is why the verses with Suga and J-Hope and
Suga and RM are repeated before and after Suga's solo verse.
‘We walk towards the
same place
But this place
becomes our last
Although we used to
talk about forever
Now we break each
other without mercy
Although we thought
that we dreamed the same dream
That dream has
finally become a dream
My heart is torn,
please burn it instead
So that pain and
regret, non of that would be left’.
It was a perfect song
to end the album Love Yourself: Tear on and successfully summarised the album
well as well as being a great song to see live as there’s nothing better than
shouting along with the chorus and letting all your frustrations out in the
process.
Just one day – Eve
Suga has this amazing
ability to rap to any, style or genre of music. Just one day took me by
surprise, included in the middle of their Skool Luv Affair album it's still
noticeably influenced by the hip hop style, the song gives the listeners a look
at BTS’ softer side, delving into the theme of young love
It has an r&b
feel about it with it’s softer beat and melodic hook running throughout the
song.
Suga opens the song with an introduction rap, resting his
signature style tongue technology speed rap to bring out his melodic words
perfectly matching the flow of the love song.
‘If only I had just
one day
I want to peacefully
fall asleep intoxicated with your sweet scent
If there’s a chance
in my busy schedule
I want to put my body
in your warm and deep eyes
I like that, your
long, straight hair
Your breathtaking
neck when you
Put it up and the
strands that fall out
Wherever we go
My handbag is your
waist
Yo ma honey
Whenever I see you I
run out of breath like the streets of Myungdong
Our BGM is the sound
of breathing
Your voice when you
say my name
I wanna be locked in
you and swim in you
I want to know you
more, an explorer venturing through your deep forest of mystery
I appreciate the
masterpiece that is you because your existence alone is art
I imagine this all
night every day
Because it’s a meaningless
dream anyway’
The song about a
loving someone and dreaming about what life could be like if they acknowledged
and reciprocated the feelings, has become one of my favourite BTS songs,
because it shows from the beginning they were never afraid to be honest about
the content of their songs, and they were ready to prove their versatility.
Give It To Me -
Cheryl
Firstly, I have to
confess that I haven’t listened to many Agust D songs, but I’m going to be
searching and listening to them all now!
Suga sounds riled
up and angry. He says “I was born from a tiger so can’t live like a
dog”. This makes me wonder if his parents are strong and
fierce? I have read that they were not very pleased with his musical
interests whilst he was in school. But he continued to follow his dreams.
To explain his
success he says “I slept less than you and moved more and grew more” and
that he may not know the secret to success but he knows the secret of failure.
“Playing like you
do and fluttering around”. This for me shows that he was focused and
dedicated to reach his dreams and follow his heart, unlike others who are not
focused and play around, wasting their time.
“I won’t beg for it
at your hands” I think he’s talking about the feeling of honour and how he won’t ask
for it from others who do not respect what he does, or his success.
“I just do what I
do, the law of the jungle” back to the tiger reference, but I feel this also
goes back to his childhood and how he had to fight for what he believed and
wanted to achieve.
The politics of the
word ‘success’ and how you fight amongst yourselves. These words are so
powerful and truthful. The word success
and what it means will have an individual meaning to everyone. Everyone’s
level of achievement will be different and most people do fight amongst
themselves to be successful - whether to be the best at school or at
work.
He says he has no
interest of living as a waste of space or weakling so those that do can just
carry on and are not to bother him. I believe Suga is a very talented,
driven and dedicated musician, who does not want to lose his focus and passion
for music, whether writing, performing or producing.
“Money, honour,
whatever is good bring it on - Give it to me”. This chorus is very
passionate - it is repeated throughout the song and I think Suga deserves to be
given everything good.
Watch the video for
a snarling angry Suga, smirking and laughing at those who judged him. He
has achieved so much and looks and sounds so proud - quite rightly so!
Cypher pt.2 -
Charlie
Skool Luv Affair is an album home to many incredible songs, including ARMY’s pick this week,
‘Tomorrow’, as well as the song I have chosen to write about today: Cypher pt.2.
As with the other
Cypher songs, Cypher pt.2 is a track by the rap line which focuses on bragging
about BTS’ talents whilst dissing anyone who attempts to undermine them.
The song starts
with Hoseok’s catchy hook, which reoccurs between verses. It’s easy to rap
along to and has a consistent rhythm, so it gives listeners a chance to bop
along until rap the line hit you with their respective verses.
“Because of who?
Because of J-Hope
Because of who?
Because of Rap Mon
Again, because of
who? Because of Suga
All of the style
and flow is because of Bangtan”
Hoseok and Namjoon
have the first 2 verses. Hoseok's verse describes how BTS will beat anyone else
“in the ring” to be the leaders of the Hallyu wave and their monster raps will
keep them moving forward. Namjoon's verse is longer and more aggressive as he
completely goes in on the haters, comparing his own rap to a nightmare, riot,
serial murder and theft, while rival rappers are “like a Kakaotalk with no
friends, no reason to look”. I love how relentlessly harsh and cutting he is
with his words in this verse.
“You old caterpillars,
I'll give you this beat, give it a try
Hey, start talking
when you can start rapping
There should be a
law restricting you from rapping”
However, the first
time I heard this song, before I had even read the lyrics, Yoongi’s verse
slapped me in the face. This is one of his fastest raps to date, and to this
day I am still in awe at how he fires through his rap at such speed. To top it
all off, at the end of it he has the audacity to laugh and yell out, “Ya!” in a
true mic-drop moment to say, “Yes, I just did that.” Every time I finish the
song, I rewind to that bit to truly appreciate how glorious it sounds.
Onto the actual
lyrics; Brilliant writer that he is, Yoongi finishes the song with even harsher
words, immediately letting everyone know that it is his time to break down any
haters.
“Hey you brats,
your crappy rap is a burden to others
Take a break and
wait, just go to Hawaii, go home
See how far I go,
all the rotten roots will be replaced
Everyone, let's
play a game, without efforts, you'll just be grieving
You think you can
do music? Just go look for a part-time job
Although your short
and thin career will get you nowhere
I hope you survive,
keep rotting away, that's your label
Your life is like a
mudfish, your rap is recycled”
Yoongi knows
exactly how to write the cruelest, most merciless lyrics and it shows. He does
not hold back when he has something to say about someone, and Cyphers like this
are the reason why whenever anyone disrespects him, ARMY looks forward to
Yoongi writing them a diss track.
Fire - Michayla
When choosing which
song to write about this week, I wanted to choose one that when I thought of
the song, I instantly connected it to Yoongi and this meant ‘Fire’.
The album ‘The Most
Beautiful Moment in Life’ is home to ‘Fire’ and it is the 10th track,
surrounded by a host of amazing songs. As well as being a great ‘stand alone’
song, it also has a captivating MV and iconic choreography that I’m sure the
majority of ARMYs know very well.
Fire, for me, is about
Yoongi because of one phrase ‘Bultaoreune’
which, again, I am sure ARMY are very well acquainted with. This word
translates to ‘burning up’ and is the very first thing we hear once the song
starts and is repeated several times throughout.
‘When
I wake up in my room, I have nothing
After
the sun sets, I sway as I walk
I’m
completely drunk, drunk
I’m
swearing on the streets
I’ve
lost it, I’m like a crazy guy
Everything’s
a mess, livin’ like beep
Live
however you want, it’s your life anyway
Stop
trying, it’s okay to lose
Errbody
say La la la la la (La la la la la)
Say
La la la la la (La la la la la)
Throw
your hands up, scream, burn it up
Burning
up’
Fire
is an uplifting song, telling the story of how you should let loose, scream and
go crazy when things aren’t exactly going your way. Further confirmation from
BTS that losing or failing is okay but that doesn’t mean you should give
up.
‘Hey,
burn it up
Like
you’re gonna set everything on fire
Hey,
turn it up
Until
the dawn is gone
It's
ok to just live because we're still young
Who
do you think you are to say otherwise
Stop
comparing, I'm only human
(So
what~)’
The
MV is bright, bold and starts with the BTS members hanging out listening to
‘Dope’. Yoongi then jumps the fence, looking at a person dressed head to toe in
black with their hood up. We can’t see the persons face as they reach their
hand out to hold Yoongi’s and he presses a cassette recorder which starts the
song and sets the person on fire.
If
there’s a chance you haven’t see the MV, please click the video below as you
will not be disappointed. Fire is a fantastic song with extremely catchy lyrics
and a dance routine you will be itching to imitate!
As
well as having the iconic opening line, Yoongi also closes the song with a
similarly iconic phrase ‘Yongseohaejulge’ which translates to ‘I will
forgive you’. Fire was destined for a Yoongi playlist and now we have one.
