Spotify - Taehyung Playlist

Taehyung - A Playlist

The penultimate playlist in our 7 part series is none other than Mr 'boxy smile' himself, Kim Taehyung. Did ‘I’m Fine’ get your vote in last week’s poll? Read below to see what the Spotify playlist team said about it.

I’m Fine chosen by ARMY

Cheryl - Firstly, I have to say I was very intrigued with the Spotify poll for Tae - I thought it would be a very close call between I’m Fine and Save Me and I really wanted I’m Fine to win - which it did.

I find the song both strong lyrically and with the choreography.  The image of Tae singing on his back being supported by J-Hope is just satisfyingly beautiful like, brothers helping brothers.

The song is about reminding oneself that I’m Fine even when darkness appears again.  It’s very empowering and feels like a mantra to me.

Michayla - I really thought the poll results would be closer this week and was interested as to how ARMY would deal with having to choose between ‘Save Me’ and ‘I’m Fine’ but with a whole 5% difference there was a clear winner.

‘I’m Fine’ begins with Tae’s amazing voice which sets the tone for the whole song, so no wonder it was ARMY’s choice. This song is simply BTS saying that they are okay, from ‘Save Me’ to ‘I’m Fine’.

How you doin? I’m fine
My sky is clear
All pain say goodbye
Goodbye’

The choreography is beautiful and I would definitely click on our link below to watch it if you haven’t done so before. This is an empowering song that will most definitely boost you up on days where you perhaps feel that negativity creeping in.

What better way is there to end this song, than the words ‘I’m Fine’ sang with the velvety deep tone that belongs to our ‘V’ Mr Kim Taehyung.

Onomey - For this weeks poll, it was fun to see who would get the most votes between ‘Save Me’ and ‘I’m Fine’ and it looks like ‘I’m Fine’ won the battle this time.
What I love about ‘I’m Fine’ compared to ‘Save Me’ is that V is a centrepiece to the dance routine and has clearly developed in his dancing abilities and vocally he stands out massively from the very start of the song because of the way his voice oozes soulfulness which makes you feel every little bit of the song along with the emotiveness he is able to display through his dancing.

21st Century Girls - Charlie

‘21st Century Girls’ shot up my list of favourite BTS songs of all time the second I watched its comeback stage. The boys all looked like they enjoyed performing it and doing the funny camera poses, the red and black outfits were cute and cool at the same time, and it was just such a feel-good song. But it wasn’t just a fun, well produced, enjoyable song; it also had a positive message about female empowerment. For a group with such a large female audience of different ages, it was refreshing to see BTS sing and rap about appreciating them, whether they’re from the 20th or 21st Century.

“You worth it you perfect
Deserve it just work it
You look elegant, elegant
Also you’re pretty, pretty
You shine, shine
You’re the truth and the reason”

I know he is my bias, but Taehyung truly stood out to me in this song. His deep but light voice at the hook, his fake chewing gum act to ooze confidence, his backwards cap pulling his hair back to expose his forehead and eyebrows, his vibrant facial expressions on stage all contribute to why the 21st Century Girls Taehyung fan cam is one of my favourite fan cams of all time. All the boys look playful, youthful and overall happy to be onstage, and Taehyung carries that stage presence and energy with his bouncy moves.

“To the 20th century girls
Live your life
Live your life come on baby
To the 21st century girls
You don’t mind
You don’t mind that new lady”

The theatrical element to the song’s performance is also perfect for Taehyung, with parts such as the “Oh yeah what is she, who is she?” lines acted out hilariously, with the boys showing faux-shocked faces. The chorus is also incredibly catchy, and even when I listen to the studio version I can still hear the “BTS, BTS” chants in my head. The music is fun and vibrant and always gets me hyped up from the first note.

Make It Right - Cheryl

The reason I chose to write about “Make It Right” was because on first hearing the song I instantly liked it.

I love that Tae opens the song - his beautiful vocals caress the instrumental background.

His voice appears so clear and poignant singing over the many instruments used delicately for the melody.

His opening lines about the first time he noticed himself, he had to leave, to find out, all day, all night - to me, it sounds like he went on a journey of self discovery.  Then he sings “uninvited, unwelcome, the only one who recognised me” makes me wonder if he is still singing about himself and thoughts - perhaps his thoughts were not invited and were unwelcome, sounding a little like self doubt.

The song appears to be about making things better and improving relationships as the chorus states “All right, All right, I can make it right”.  Perhaps it relates to BTS as a whole unit and that together they can make it right, as well as reaching out to Army.

It’s also about growing and comparing how much they have changed. RM says he’s a little taller than he used to be with a voice more solid.

Suga’s bridge claiming the reason he survived in hell was not for himself but because of you (could “you” be Army?) and that if you are aware don’t hesitate and please save my life - I personally feel these are such deep meaningful lyrics which contrast with the beautiful melody.

It’s an intimate song, sung to the listener (Army) and I know from many Army’s how BTS have indeed made their lives so much better.

Heartbeat - Michayla

I had a real dilemma choosing which song to write about this week after having recently written about Singularity and having done Stigma in the past. I wanted a song that reminded me of Tae and made me think of him when I listened to it. After having a short list of 2 songs, I let my Daughter and Niece decide for me and here we are.

I instantly loved ‘Heartbeat’ when it was released and part of that appeal was the amazing MV and the fact I was immersed in the game. Heartbeat is the title track on the album that accompanies BTS World and the song you can hear playing in the lobby of the game.

BTS World is set in a different universe and this is the underlying theme of the song. Each of the 7 members stories are featured in the MV so of course Tae is shown in ‘story mode’, in the large hat and checked shirt. I actually find the MV really moving, I think because I play the game and feel that connection to their stories.

The song definitely tugs at these emotions and I have so many favourite parts. I really feel that the song is talking about the relationship between BTS and ARMY. Jimin’s verse I believe could mean if the 7 members hadn’t met, they may have given up alone, like in the game they do not know each other to begin with.

If I was only by myself
If I didn’t know you
Maybe I’d have given up
Lost at sea’

The word destiny is sang alot and this applies both to the game and in real life where ARMY is concerned. Was it always destiny that ARMY and BTS found each other?

The reason ‘Heartbeat’ is my song for this week is because it is Tae’s voice that starts the song and he also has the last verse with Jungkook. His voice is distinguishable as always throughout the song especially when he sings the line ‘And every time my heart beats, Match your steps so you don’t wander around ever again’.

I am invested in his story in BTW World so the MV definitely strikes a chord with me, I can picture the scenes in the MV when I am listening to the song, it truly is beautiful from beginning to end.

I feel the destiny in you you you you you
Feel the destiny in me me me me me
I feel the destiny in you you you you you’
Feel the destiny in me me me me me’

Stigma - Onomey

Stigma is the fifth track of the Wings album which was released in 2016. The title in itself is clever because when listening to the track without the lyrics, you automatically begin to think that it is just a casual smooth R&B slow dance love song but when you look at the lyrics you find out that it is totally the opposite. There is a lot of deeper meanings behind the lyrics, which fits the concept of stigma because the whole concept of stigma is something that is associated with something but doesn’t necessarily fit it which is like the song. Beneath the surface of a typical R&B sounding love song is a lot of negative undertones throughout it.

I’m a big fan of ‘old skool’ R&B and soul as it's the music that I grew up listening to as a child and this song despite its negative tone makes me smile because it's nice to know that there are still artists capable of creating and performing songs of that genre. I can’t quite put my finger on how I’d describe soulful vocals but I will try my best.

The song starts off with a very deep drum kick and a minimalist piano which allows the focus to be on V throughout the song. When I listen to Stigma, V catches my attention from the very first word he sings with his deep vocals, you can hear the rawness in this voice that makes you feel every little thing he does which makes the lyrics in this song all that more important. There's nothing better in my opinion than listening to a song that captures your attention and makes you feel something to the point where you get goosebumps from listening to such a beautiful performance of a song.

I like that V is able to explore through his vocal range throughout this song. Like the way he sings in falsetto for most of the song but especially in the chorus whilst having a call and response between his vocals and the trumpet.

‘Deeper, deeper, the wound just gets deeper
Like pieces of broken glass that I can’t reverse
Deeper, it’s just the heart that hurts every day
You who was punished in my stead
You who were only delicate and fragile’.

My favourite part of the song is definitely the bridge as it really shows how great his higher range of vocals are but also how the bridge acts as a release of all the pain after apologising with a long stretched high vocal run.

Spring Day - Marsha

"You know it all, you're my best friend, The morning will come again. No darkness, no season is eternal"

One of the most memorable and beautiful lyrics from the queen that is Spring Day.

Taehyung fits the style and sound of this song so well with his deep and rich dulcet tones all the way up to his crisp falsetto.
Spring Day is a song about the calm after the storm, hope and light that things will eventually get better even through prolonged periods of sadness.
"Passing by the edge of the cold winter
Until the days of spring
Until the days of flower blossoms
Please stay, please stay there a little longer"
This song, along with its music video is stunningly hauntingly beautiful and each member plays such an important part in the entire story.
This song will forever be one of the classics.
