An Evening with BTS

Earlier this year Bangtan Sonyeondan, a 7 member group from South Korea, most commonly known as BTS, announced their world tour. On the day the announcement trailer was released, thousands, maybe millions of fans from all over the world held their breath, hoping to see their city on the list, and there it was...London. For the very first time, BTS were coming to perform in the UK! BTS booked two days, the 9th and 10th of October, with the 20,000 capacity venue The O2 Arena. Both days sold out rapidly and I was lucky enough to get tickets.

On the 10th October, Day 2 of the London Concerts, we took the long drive from Greater Manchester to London which, with traffic and many coffee and food stops, took us around five hours.

Outside the venue was buzzing and the place was jam packed with people. The line for merchandise was longer than you would believe. It was such an ecstatic feeling being surrounded by so many fellow ARMY and the anticipation was growing, as was the excitement.

We queued at an Express Stall to buy our ARMY Bombs (light sticks), and then we made our way inside. After going through security checks and pairing our ARMY bombs to our seats, we sat and waited. Inside the venue was bustling. There were fan chants, singing and laughter filling every corner. The euphoric feeling in the air was almost palpable.
The room was alive with noise. Music videos played on the big screens while everyone sang and chanted along, waving their ARMY Bombs. I think everybody had the same mutual feeling; we were really about to see them live on stage, many for the first time, and not just on our computer screens. We could barely believe it.

When BTS came onto the stage, the venue erupted. Of all the concerts I’ve been to, that was definitely the loudest. My heart was beating heavy and hard in my chest. I wasn’t sure whether to scream, laugh, or cry, so I guess I did a little of all. Seeing them live right in front of you when you are so used to seeing them behind a screen, was surreal.

Their voices sounded incredible and the choreography was insane! Seeing it in their music videos was amazing, but in real life. WOW. They are so in sync with each other and their stage presence is just phenomenal. They are a seriously talented and incredibly good looking group of individuals. Although one member, Jungkook, had an injury so had to sit out the choreography, it made no difference to any of us present.  Song after song, the venue continued to light up. They gave us all of their energy, and we gave them ours. You really get to see their personalities and individuality shine. They were so cool and confident, like that stage was theirs, and boy did they own it!

My favourite part of the night was during the song Answer: Love Myself. To hear them, and ARMY, the O2 full of thousands of people all singing, “You showed me I have reasons I should love myself.” “I’m learning how to love myself.” was beautiful. They have helped so many people across the globe, to love their selves a little more and what an amazing and inspiring message to spread through your music. The mutual love and adoration in that arena was so sincere, and it was near tangible. You really felt it. The look in their eyes and every ARMYs eyes spoke volumes. They weren’t just performing; they were connecting with each and every one of us.
Right there, at that moment, we were all one. The sense of belonging and unity that you felt there in that arena was amazing. In that moment everything was perfect. Nothing else mattered, but us and them.  That night was, as it is with concerts, a fleeting moment that you wish could last forever. You try hard to grasp onto every detail and before you know it, it’s over. But, no matter how much time passes, and no matter how old I get, I’ll think back to that day, and in those memories we will all be young forever, in our own little utopia.thumbnail_IMG-2495.jpg
