Know The Team Through BTS - Shinara

Shinara's - No Words... Have It!
This
was so difficult, choosing only 8 songs out of their discography! There were
many, (SOOOO MANY) that I cut. And these are in no way in any sort of order of
preference.
Spring Day
When
asked if I have a favourite BTS song, my immediate answer is no, I love them
all. While to an extent that is true, there is one song that I would never
leave. So I guess in some respects I am lying to myself.
Spring
Day was released at a time where I was feeling very low. A brand new Army,
having only discovered BTS just a month prior, it was my 1st
comeback. My anticipation and excitement grew mainly because of my daughter. It
wasn’t anything that I had experienced before with any of the western artists I
had followed.
The
teaser itself was the most beautiful, haunting thing I’d heard in a while. The
MV was…IS… the most beautifully
filmed piece of cinematography. The song’s melody instantly caught my
attention; there was a sadness that was present throughout, but in that last
part, the song switched and left me feeling hopeful.
The morning will come again
No darkness, no season is eternal
Maybe it’s cherry blossoms
And this winter will be over
I miss you
Wait a little bit, just a few more
nights
I’ll be there to see you
I’ll come for you
Those
words hit me the hardest; it felt like they were speaking to me on a personal
level. They were truth and also healing; that yes... you have lost someone, you
miss them, you always will, but that darkness will not last forever. One day
you will meet them again.
There are nuances to the lyrics of Spring Day that can only really be fully appreciated if you can read and understand fluent Hangeul, for example "눈꽃이 떨어져요" is translated as “snowflakes are falling” but its literal translation of 눈꽃이is “snow flower” which is a metaphor referring to snow that settles on tree branches that resemble flowers… in essence, winter trying to recreate spring, but failing. (Translation thanks to @BTS_ARMY_INT)

It’s no wonder that Spring Day is a firm favourite with the
Korean people and is still in the charts 2 years after its release!
War of Hormone
This
may seem a strange choice considering BST was actually the 1st MV
that I saw but this is the song that actually made me Army!
It’s
just a fun song, and I think I was more drawn to the aesthetics of the MV more
than anything at 1st (my daughter can attest to this as I played it
constantly every single day!)
It’s
a group of young guys fighting their hormones, and who hasn’t been there!
From
Namjoon singing:
(Very much) thank you! For improving my
eye sight
(Natural LASIK) Don’t need to spend
money on that
To
Jungkook saying:
I’m 18; I know what I need to know
I know that girls are the best things in
the world
Yes I’m a bad boy, so I like bad girl
It
was cute, hearing them trying to act manly, and wondering to myself would I
have fallen for such cheesy lines as a teenager.
Look Here
Look
Here is an upbeat flirty song, about a guy telling the girl to “look here” and
notice him. It has a cute funky beat and makes you want to get up and bop to
it. It shows off their mischievous side and trying to impress.
Us meeting isn’t just coincidence
Meeting you was what I wanted
You’re a flower and I’m a bee
You’re honey and I’m a bear
The
sound is very American, quite similar to Pharrell Williams, and was BTS
experimenting with different sounds away from normal kpop. Let’s face it
though, BTS have never really been regular
kpop!
Come Back Home
This
reworking of Seo Taiji’s classic was a genius idea and I love it. Beginning the
track off is a stunning falsetto by none other than Worldwide Handsome himself,
Jin.
Reminiscent
of old school hip hop songs that I heard while in high school with its heavy
baseline and powerful beat, it sparked a feeling of nostalgia, and made me
realise just how versatile BTS were. Like chameleons they were able to not only
adapt to the old style, but they also managed to put their own spin on the song
and make it their own.
I feel suffocated inside my heart
What is blocking my life is my fear
towards tomorrow
Angry? Hungry? Yes I’m Hangry
Everyday is repeating, the future is
bleak
There was no me
And there was no future
The
lyrics of the song are quite dark, emphasising the hardships of life but by
also speaking of the need to overcome these adversities BTS emulates the
messages of inspiration they are well known for.
Because we are still young
There’s a decent future
Now wipe those cold tears
And Come Back Home
Baepsae
Need
I say more? Yeah.. didn’t think so
Butterfly – Prologue Mix
While
the original Butterfly is beautiful, the prologue mix has an extra edge to it
for me. There’s something about the piano notes, which send shivers down my
spine. The vocals somehow seem softer and ethereal. I can just sit and let
their voices wash over me, zoning out of the world and its worries. The backing
vocals harmonising with the mains are amazingly clear and pure. I can be
listening to the song and be so mesmerised that I don’t even realise that there
are tears flowing. Clarity is what comes to mind.
Will you stay by my side
Will you promise me
If I let go of your hand,
You’ll fly away and break
I’m scared, scared, scared of that
The
lyrics use the butterfly as a metaphor for the fear of losing someone
unexpectedly. Life and relationships being as delicate as they are, if I let go
of your hand will you fly away, will you break.
Pied Piper
From
the very 1st note this song draws you in very much like the Pied
Piper of the original fairytale. It lures you in with the false sense of
security that everything is going to be fine before they take you down with
their message, and all this through a carefree melody that makes you bop. The
song is deceptive in the way it makes me feel, it brings me joy even though I
know that BTS is gently reprimanding me, and I gladly accept the admonition.
Stop
Now stop watching and study for your
test
Your parents and boss hate me
Video clips, pictures, tweets
V app, Bon Voyage
I know, you can’t help what you like
But stop, interpret the music video
later
You have so many picture of me in your
room anyway
It’s not just one hour, it’s a whole
year that’ll disappear
So this song is an award I’m giving to
you
Good
The
lyrics of the song is so self-aware of what it is to be Army, how we stop
everything in our life when they tweet, or upload a video, or release a song.
Our life seems to revolve around what they do. Taking down the very fan
culture, they are telling us to stop, live your own life, the tweet will still be
there, the video will still be there, so live your life and then come to them.
To call is a diss track about us would be simplistic.
Outro: Wings
This
is just pure joy to me. It instantly makes me want to get up and jump and dance
with abandon. The words themselves are so positive and make me feel so happy.
I knew these small feathers would become
wings
I knew the wings would make me fly
I had that faith
Along with laughter
They
speak of having faith in yourself, self-belief that you will succeed.
I went on the road that I was told not
to go
I did things I was told not to do
I wanted things I couldn’t want
I got hurt and hurt again
You can call me stupid
Then I’ll just smile
I don’t wanna succeed
By doing things I don’t wanna do
I’m pushing myself
Don’t
let others dictate your life. If you know what you want, focus, work hard;
though there may be knock backs, don’t be discouraged. You will make it.
