Bring the Soul: Review - Michayla Rapley 💜

Bring the Soul: The Movie

Having seen ‘Burn The Stage’ I knew what to expect from ‘Bring The Soul’ except that this time there would be a personal connection since I had been to both dates at the O2 in October 2018.

It starts with the 7 members arriving at a restaurant in Paris on 21st October 2019 where they discuss the tour and the shows already performed. This was such a lovely touch as it cut to this scene several times throughout the film and provided a focal point as ‘post show’
chat. They start off in Seoul and we are treated to the performance of Mic Drop which is always welcome and then they go to America to perform the string of shows there and attend the Grammy museum. I had seen the interview at the Grammy museum and various footage but to see the behind the scenes video was great, especially knowing that they did make it to the Grammy's this year albeit not necessarily in the capacity we had hoped.

London was next and this part broke me. We all knew how excited they were to get to Europe, especially the UK and then to actually see the excitement was so difficult when you know what happened to Jungkook. I was sat at the O2 while they were deciding whether Jungkook could perform, when they were thinking that he would have to go to hospital and possibly wouldn’t make it back in time for the show. To see all this, to hear that Namjoon was concerned about Jungkook's mental health because of how much he loved to perform whilst remembering that Vlive Jungkook did whilst in Europe, was heartbreaking.

I will never forget the emotion of 9th October 2018 and the relief when I saw Jungkook on his chair, on stage. Seeing what happened backstage was heartwarming as well as heartbreaking because the concern of the other members, the way they supported Jungkook and found a way to put on the amazing show they did, the way medical staff worked with them, there were positives in what was a very difficult situation.

The next stops were Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris. During these concerts it was wonderful to see Hobi (J-Hope) walking around outside, taking in the sights of Berlin, even though he was feeling under the weather due to having a cold. We also saw Jin out and about which provided lots of laughs when he said he could get killed by one peck from a bird that looked like a Stork and then wanted to ‘go somewhere safer’. Jin was so endearing and in the car he spoke about how when he is in Korea he can get hold of food easily but abroad it is difficult because security has to go with him and he doesn’t like bothering them. He has such a big heart and was so, so entertaining throughout, always carrying RJ with him which got lots of audible noises from the audience in the cinema.

We also got to see Jimin shopping and the hoodie he purchased, Namjoon discussing the fact that he realised that BTS were now famous because he saw lots of people in BTS t-shirts whilst in a German department store and how Taehyung suffered during the Paris show. I had been very close to attending the Paris show but we didn’t go and watched a live stream instead. I remember my heart breaking when I watched Taehyung unable to sing his part in The Truth Untold and how he was so upset at the end.

The difficulty for me is that I know how hard they are on themselves. They always strive to do better and when things do go wrong, it gets to them on such a deep level. It’s at times like this that I would love for them to see it through my eyes, see what ARMYs see. I am grateful for all the hard work they put in but at the same time I wish it didn’t affect them so
greatly at times. There were so many stand out moments in ‘Bring The Soul’, moments that had the whole audience laughing. One of those was when they were all sat around the table in Paris and they were imitating each other. Jungkook imitated Hobi’s introduction ‘I’m your hope...’  perfectly and then the maknae line mimicked Yoongi’s ‘It is hot in here, ARMY... because... of you’ and that was just incredible.

Other funny moments were Jimin yelling at Jungkook because he wanted to go back to the hotel and they shared a car so because Jungkook was taking his time, they couldn’t leave. Jin was also hilarious telling everyone it was time to go, if it was anyone in your every day life in the same situation, it wouldn’t have been anywhere near as amusing but Jin did everything with a smile on his face and could probably make any situation humorous. We heard a lot from Namjoon during the film and as always, his words were poignant and meaningful. Even when he feels that he isn’t conveying the point well, he is and I love hearing him speak. Everything he says is so well thought out and almost always from his heart. I never thought it would be possible to have so much respect for someone I will never meet, but I have.

There was a scene where Yoongi and Jimin are in the gym, Jimin explains that he started working out because of Fake Love. The choreography he found difficult so started a work out regime to improve his stamina and Yoongi got a lot of laughs when he said he was told he didn’t have a lot of muscle strength. It was even more amusing when Yoongi spoke about getting ‘buff’ and how he wouldn’t be able to handle it, and to himself as ‘Captain Korea’.

You get to see so much in ‘Bring The Soul’ and for every scene I write about, there are many more scenes that come to mind. I felt pretty much the same way I did after watching ‘Burn The Stage’ in that I have guilt for wanting to see BTS live, knowing what they put themselves through, it seems to be a battle because I genuinely care about these 7 guys but want to see them at every given opportunity. I suppose this is the life of being a fan.

Namjoon said he wanted BTS to show ARMY how grateful they are because we waited for them before a concert. He spoke about how it is physically tough on them to perform for 2 and a half hours but how incredibly difficult it is for us to cheer, sing and dance for 3 hours for them. I have been that person waiting for BTS to appear on stage, I have been that person singing and dancing for 3 hours plus and I would like to say this to Namjoon...

… I have never felt so loved and included by an artist. At every concert I have attended, I believed you were grateful that I was there. Every scream, every moment queuing, every song I sang was worth it because I wanted to show you that I appreciate everything you do. Borahae.

  1. Fantastic review, this film was a real rollercoaster emotionally but a must see for any ARMY. Very heart warming and a great look at what goes on behind the scenes. These 7 men put an astounding amount of their heart and soul into everything they do and it really shows.
