Winter Bear: Review

Winter Bear

Friday 9th August 2019 saw ‘I purple you 1000’ trending on social media to mark the 1000th day since Taehyung coined the phrase ‘I purple you’ when he posted on Weibo in July 2018. It was a wonderful surprise when ‘Winter Bear’ was suddenly released, not only on Soundcloud but also on YouTube with the most heart warming MV to accompany it.

The song itself starts with a guitar and it isn’t long before the sultry tone of Taehyung's voice is heard. Winter Bear is elevated so beautifully in the pre-chorus when Taehyung sings in a higher pitch which can only be described as angelic.

Imagine your face
Say hello to me
Then all the bad days
They’re nothing to me
With you’

Is it the face of ARMY being spoken about? Could it be ARMY that help Taehyung through his bad days? Perhaps one day we will hear from Taehyung about the thoughts behind the lyrics and what this song means to him.

The instruments are quite simple yet effective, guitars and a drum are heard with the drum keeping the constant beat. Whether it is the rawness of the instruments and the sound they provide or the lyrics, I get an ‘outdoor’ vibe, a countryside walk sort of song.

This is a song, I could easily get lost in, eyes closed, laying in the sun or in bed as I drift off to sleep, ‘Winter Bear’ is soothing and gentle.

The MV brought so many emotions to the surface because it felt so very personal. Taehyung wrote the English lyrics and starred in/directed the MV himself and since it is a gift to ARMY, it really did feel intimate.

We see Taehyung in some of the places he has been to, taking photographs and videos of his surroundings, of the ‘scenery’. Through his eyes we see streets, birds, a park with trees and at one point he is sat eating and he has his phone held up to his face where we can see a photo of Tannie, which was so endearing.

The song, the MV, and the clothes he is wearing all come together to give us a glimpse of what makes Taehyung, Taehyung, on a personal level. It is almost like we get a snippet of the man himself, through his eyes and and I feel so privileged to be a part of it all.
