Episode 4: Influence

'No Matter What Anyone Says, We Are Who We Are'

Starting off with the UN and ending with their Citifield concert, episode 4 focused on the North American leg of the world tour. And it's safe to say that this time round, BTS has grown even more.

But the focus was not on how successful they were, or what they were thinking amongst all this fame. The episode was indeed a lot deeper than the others and seemed to hit me harder as a viewer; so much that I couldn't pinpoint my exact emotions after watching it.

Influence. No matter how old we are, how many role models we have, it's clear that everyone has been influenced by or has had/has an influencer in their life. Everyone has that someone that they look up to. But what we tend to miss, is the biggest influence that we all have. This influence is the one thing that you and I have in common.

The episode focuses on the UN speech that Namjoon delivered as well as the members talking about who they are. Jimin and Hoseok after a shopping spree talked about their names and how their names have made them who they are. Whilst Jungkook talks about his name on and off stage and although are evidently the same, feels different in both situations. Taehyung quotes the saying "One needs to Love oneself first before loving others" and then goes on to say that he hasn't loved himself enough and is learning and trying to love himself more now. Yoongi talks about how the fact that they are more popular now means that he feels like he has to show his best side and be flawless, and Jin feels he has a sense of responsibility to uphold with their current status. With Namjoon topping it off by talking about his mixtape mono and how the songs are things that he wishes he could say to himself.

The importance of all of this, the message behind what the members are saying all correspond with the idea of influence. We might not think about it and not even notice it but listening to each and every member talk about themselves made me realise something. It made me realise that our biggest influence is ourselves. We influence ourselves to love or hate ourselves, to love or hate someone else, to go after our dreams, to even be happy. These are things no one can influence or bring to us - it's something that we have to bring ourselves. What we do, how we feel, how we think, it's not influenced by anyone but ourselves.

Thinking about this, the UN speech, takes on a new meaning. 'Speak Yourself' - know that you influence who you are so you should take the chance to embrace each and every part of you and don't feel or be ashamed of any part of you. Only you know your true identity, only you can influence yourself to be who you want to be. Just you. No one else.

"Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and mistakes"
