BTS: Tiny Desk Concert - A Review

A Tiny Concert but A Big Performance

A group of men who have been widely considered to be incredible dancers, but whose vocals deserve worlds of recognition by the general public who may not be familiar with them.

Dressed in outfits of citrusy oranges and reds coupled with funky glasses and denim.

Clean vocals showcased a performance that stood out leagues above others in the industry, despite it being unplugged and separate from their more flashy performances. To a Billboard #1 hit.

BTS’ NPR tiny desk (home) concert broke the record of most views in 24 hours for other performances on that channel - in a mere 25 minutes. Fans were not even trying to break a record, but at the time of writing, the video has 6.5 million views. This was a stunning performance for the group, whose vocals were strong and clean.

The performance of course started with Dynamite, and it was lovely to see the members look so cool and comfortable performing the song. Despite how difficult 2020 has been, it seems that Dynamite already represents a lot of happy memories and achievements for BTS - it is evident from how enjoyable their expressions were, and how they bopped around despite the seated nature of the performance (not that that stopped most of them from standing up to imitate dance moves or simply throw their hands up in joy and freestyle to the song’s toe-tapping vibe). It was their first time performing Dynamite with a live band, and I loved this different atmosphere to the song.

I was surprised to see that the next song was Save Me, but it seemed fitting. In 2020, BTS and ARMY have felt that they have to rely on each other and others around us, to stop us from feeling as though we are alone and drowning. Save Me tells us that this is okay. I must point out Hoseok's and Jungkook’s harmonising during Hoseok’s verse, as it was so very pleasing to the ear. It felt perfectly smooth and clear.

They ended their set with Spring Day, which was probably to have been expected. Before 2020, it had been a while since BTS had performed this beloved hit, but they have been bringing it back lately, no doubt due to how comforting it is and how it reminds BTS and ARMY that however much we miss each other, Spring will come soon. I can imagine them performing this at their ON:E concert in October, then at their tour when it can finally start. For this performance in particular, I could see in their expressions and hear in their tones, that they were feeling every word as they sang and rapped them, and they succeeded in the way in which they seemed to be emphasising every word to make sure that we paid attention to the lyrics. From their fully English song to cheer us all up, to two of their native language songs that tell us that it is okay to miss someone and to need saving, they proved that they can move us to dance or to lament, in multiple languages.

Their performances felt unique, with fun adlibs. The members were definitely relaxed and in their element. They are unquestionably itching to perform in front of fans, as evidenced by how they often called out for us, such as when Taehyung called out “ARMY! Can you hear us?” and said that they missed us. Nonetheless, this performance was full of that signature goofy yet sincere Bangtan energy. I thoroughly enjoyed this performance, and from the looks of the YouTube comments, so did non-fans.

As expected, this performance opened the eyes of a new, perhaps unexpected, audience, to BTS’ artistry, so let’s wait a little longer for tickets to go on sale to finally see them again, because it will be even more competitive after this display.
